Family Career Night

Students visit a table and talk with an industry volunteer

The goal of WABS' Family Career Night program is to help middle school students and their families identify and explore their career strengths and interests and consider career opportunities that may be a good match for them. We primarily focus on 8th graders as they are getting ready to go to high school, and this type of career exploration can help with class registration, choosing extracurricular activities, and deciding on the next steps in their career pathway.

At the event, students and their family:

  • Take a career interest inventory. Students & adults complete the brief survey to identify their personal career interest themes
  • Learn together as a family. Career Pathway decisions are often family decisions. Having shared knowledge and language helps families discuss strengths, values, and interests together — and what careers they might point toward.
  • Connect with industry volunteers. Talk with industry volunteers who share how they got to where they are today and what they love about their career.
  • Leave with next steps. Students leave with concrete ideas for continuing to explore careers that interest them.

“I liked hearing insight on other jobs, hearing about these careers (some I’ve never heard of) made me realize how wide of a horizon I have.”
