Career Shadows are an employer-hosted, work-based learning experience where students develop and deepen their exposure, knowledge, and interest in a specific career they were introduced to during a worksite visit, career day, or other career connected learning activity. Students gain first-hand experience with the daily operations of an industry, practical insights, and world of work context necessary to make informed career decisions.
During the onsite visit, students briefly tour the workplace, then match with an employee volunteer “Career Guide” to better understand the contours of a career of interest, including the competencies, skills, lifestyle, contributions, and experiences of their guide. This experience also includes work-based learning activities, individual reflections, and small group presentations.
Washington Alliance for Better Schools (WABS) provides templates, and training for the company lead and Career Guides, as well as preparation and lesson templates for teachers.
Hosting a Career Shadow has never been easier! WABS staff will work with you to design an engaging day, coordinate logistics with the school, and support you throughout the planning process.
